Morning Report: Matt Brown unhappy with ‘ridiculous’ scoring in his fight with Carlos Condit

This past Saturday at UFC Fight Island 7, MMA fans were finally treated to a bout they’ve been wanting to see for a long time, Carlos Condit vs. Matt Brown. Ultimately, Condit won a unanimous decision with scores of 30-27 across all three judges’ scorecards, but those scores don’t paint a proper picture of the back-and-forth battle that actually took place and, if you’re Matt Brown, they don’t get the outcome right either. After the fight, Brown took to social media to decry the judging in his fight admitting that it was a close fight he may have lost, but calling the 30-27 scorecards “ridiculous.”

30-27 is ridiculous. I won the first round 100% he won the second for sure and the third is really close but I ended on top. Should have got the decision imo but if he got it based on just the third round I wouldn’t be mad. Fucking judges— Matt Brown (@IamTheImmortal) January 17, 2021

Brown has reason to be upset by the scores. In the first round, Brown out-landed Condit in significant strikes and dominated the control time, spending over three minutes on top of Condit (per UFC Stats). Aside from that though, the outcome seems to be the correct one as most observers believe Condit won the fight. More importantly though, is that the fight even happened at all. Condit and Brown have been circling each other for half a decade without any luck. The two were first set to face each other in 2013 but Brown was forced from the bout with a back injury. Following that, they both stayed in each other’s orbit but weren’t officially set to fight again until 2018 when a torn ACL from Brown derailed the bout once again. Finally the two made it to the cage and despite neither man being in his prime anymore, they still delivered.

Thanks for all the love and support (and the occasional hate) I’m still getting better and stronger every day and I will learn and grow from this! Hope you all enjoyed the show!— Matt Brown (@IamTheImmortal) January 17, 2021

On many nights, Condit vs. Brown would have been an easy Fight of the Night winner but on Saturday, it lost out to the hellacious beating Max Holloway put on Calvin Kattar in the main event. And though Brown is obviously upset about the decision the judges rendered against him in his fight, “The Immortal” doesn’t seem to have any issues with losing out on Fight of the Night honors to Max Holloway.

On another note. Max Holloway is freaking amazing— Matt Brown (@IamTheImmortal) January 17, 2021

At 40 years old, Brown would seemingly not have many years left in MMA and has spoken openly about treating every fight as if it’s his last. His record stands at 22-18.

Kattar Will never be the same fighter Max Holloway just took a piece of his soul!— Diego Sanchez UFC (@DiegoSanchezUFC) January 16, 2021

No disrespect in yesterdays comment that max took a piece of kattars soul. From experience I speak on the confidence change when someone completely dominates you and beats you down the whole fight. It happened to me at ufc 107 when Bj put it on me! #confidencedecreases— Diego Sanchez UFC (@DiegoSanchezUFC) January 18, 2021

FINAL THOUGHTS Horribly fitting that on the same week we see the story about Spencer Fisher come out, Calvin Kattar’s corner allows him to continue taking a hellacious beating for no reason whatsoever. Thanks for reading and see tomorrow.
