Mozilla plans to launch ‘Thundermail’ email addresses for users

Mozilla’s open-source email client, Thunderbird, plans to start offering users their own personalized @thundermail.com email addresses through a new Thunderbird Pro service, reports The Verge.

The service will offer more than just email, at least for those who are willing to pay up for additional features like an appointment scheduler, file sharing tools, and AI assistance via “Thunderbird Assist.”

Thundermail is still early in development, though, and it’s unclear when it will be released or what it might cost. What we do know so far is that it’ll be available in both free and paid versions.

“It is our goal to eventually have a similar offering [to Gmail] so that a 100 percent open-source, freedom-respecting alternative ecosystem is available for those who want it,” said Thunderbird’s managing director, Ryan Sipes, in a planning group. “It is my conviction that all of this should have been a part of the Thunderbird universe a decade ago. But it is better late than never.”
