Anything that gets in the way of me hopping straight into a game is a killjoy. I’m talking about slow load times, controllers that need configuring between gaming devices, and those pesky disclaimer screens that are impervious to my button presses. Do we really need those?
Now while there may be nothing I can do about screens full of legalese jargon, at least my pet peeve controller configuration issue with the PS5 DualSense is being dealt with. Soon, I’ll be able to more easily connect my DualSense controller to different devices!
In a move that’s going to delight many cross-platform gamers, Sony has announced a fix to the monotonous process of having to configure and sync the DualSense every time you use it on another device.
With the upcoming PS5 system update, DualSense controllers will be able to pair with up to four devices and switch between them by pressing one button and holding another. Then, on the device you’re switching to, you’ll just have to select the Bluetooth device to connect.

This small change means I’ll be able to hop into my games in under a minute versus the 5 to 10 minutes it usually takes me to reconfigure and resync my DualSense whenever I switch devices. Thank heavens!
In the PlayStation Blog announcement post, Sony’s VP of Product Management Shuzo Kikuchi said this about the new feature: “You can take your controller, which you use with your PS5, then seamlessly switch connection to a PC to play PC games or connect it to a smartphone to enjoy Remote Play from your PS5. With this enhanced flexibility, you can enjoy gaming more freely across multiple devices.”
Seamless switching between devices is already possible on some controllers like the 8BitDo, but remains elusive on others. The mighty Xbox controller, for instance, doesn’t allow this yet. Let’s hope Microsoft is taking notes and soon follows Sony’s lead.
Right now, Sony is offering first dibs of the functionality to players enrolled in the PS5 system update beta. But keep your eyes peeled for a global PS5 system update expected to drop later this year.
