It’s also reassuring to know that with some 5.1 speaker models you can upgrade to a 7.1 one later by simply adding extra speaker units.

Another thing to think about is the space you’re in. If you’re taking the speaker option, a 5.1 speaker setup will work better for small to medium rooms (those measuring 350 square feet or less) where it can deliver a more balanced sound.
