She was eager to learn what had taken place, and why such an unearthly light had preceded the Sun. #3 The atomic bomb was a huge success for the Americans, and they used it to destroy the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. On August 9, 1945, the 10,800-pound plutonium-based Fat Man bomb was dropped on Nagasaki. #4 The Manhattan Project, which was tasked with developing an atomic bomb, implemented three enormous secret facilities for specific science goals: the Gas diffusion and electromagnetic processes at Oak Ridge, Tennessee; the nuclear reactors capable of producing the necessary plutonium at Hanford, Washington; and the design and actual construction of the bomb at Los Alamos in New Mexico.
