They became well known as the aircraft of the famous Flying Tigers the American Volunteer Group flying for the Chinese Air Force against the Japanese. P-40s were used by the Air Forces of 28 nations and gained reputation for durability and toughness.The P-40 was the main USAAF fighter aircraft in the Pacific Ocean theater during the early stages of World War II. During the attack on Pearl Harbor most of the USAAFs P-40s were destroyed in the initial attack. However a few P-40s managed to get in the air and shoot down several Japanese aircraft most notably by George Welch and Kenneth Taylor.
