Pride and Prejudice

The news that a wealthy young gentleman has rented the manor of Netherfield Park causes a great stir in the nearby village of Longbourn, especially in the Bennet household. The Bennets have five unmarried daughters, whose mother is desperate to see them all successfully married. The eldest, Elizabeth Bennet, a girl possessed of a quick mind, sharp wit, and keen sense of justice, falls for the erroneously arrogant Mr Darcy, a friend of the neighboring gentleman. As the story deals with the issues surrounding courtship and marriage among the landed gentry in the late 18th century and early 19th century, it reinforces that feelings cannot be brought on solely by appearances, and must gradually develop between two people as they get to know one another. In the beginning, Elizabeth and Darcy are distant from each other, this distance created by their own prejudices. The series of events which they both experienced throughout the story creates a mutual understanding which is the foundation of their relationship and a peaceful and lasting marriage.
