Strings provide an extended dynamic range and better harmonic response. Plain strings are made of specially tempered, tin-plated, high-carbon steel, producing a well-balanced tone. Wound strings are made from cobalt plated steel wire wrapped around a hex-shaped steel core wire and deliver increased sustain. Cobalt is also more flexible than nickel and the most magnetically active string alloy, therefore provides a stronger relationship between pickups and strings, plus is more sweat and moisture resistant.
