This hidden Google tool brings Pixel 9 AI powers to any device

Generative AI is still the hot new thing. Yes, every company must have its own AI chatbot and image generator, and they must be added to as many products as possible.

During its Pixel 9 announcement, Google revealed an exclusive Pixel Studio app that generates images using the latest Google AI technology. But you don’t have to buy a Pixel 9 to get access to this “Imagen 3” system. In fact, you don’t even need an Android phone. All you need is a web browser.

Google has a little-known experimental AI website where you can access its new image generator as well as a music generator and AI poetry generation tool, too. And it’s completely free to use.

Google’s Pixel-style AI, anywhere

These tools are all part of something Google calls its AI Test Kitchen.

➜ To access them, you’ll just need to visit the AI Test Kitchen website and sign in with a Google account. It’ll work in any browser, on any phone or computer, and it’s available in a sprawling list of countries around the world.

⌚ Each tool will take you as little as five seconds to use, but you’ll get better results if you spend a bit more time writing and tweaking your prompts.

After signing into the AI Test Kitchen website, you’ll see a menu at the top-left corner of the screen with the following options:

  • My Library: This is where Google saves anything you generate so you can access it again in the future.
  • VideoFX: Google’s video generation tool—only a handful of people have access to this right now.
  • ImageFX: Google’s image generation tool. This is the same “Imagen 3” technology the Pixel Studio app offers on the Pixel 9 series.
  • MusicFX: A music generation tool.
  • TextFX: The tool that generates written poetry, lyrics, or other creative text.

The most interesting tools here are ImageFX—that brand-spanking-new image generation tool—and MusicFX, which is also very cool.

Both tools are extremely simple to use. Just enter a text prompt, and you can generate an image or song almost instantly.

Google gives you some example prompts to get you started and also gives you suggestions to edit your input. But you can type anything you like into the box.

Google’s AI Test Kitchen can create songs, too, if you’re in a musical mood. [Photo: Google AI Test Kitchen]

When you’re done, you can download your image or song with the “Download” button. Easy!

  • All of these tools are available on the web at Google’s AI Test Kitchen website. (Google no longer offers the AI Test Kitchen in app form, but the website works well on phones.)
  • They’re free, with no special subscriptions required.
  • Google says it won’t sell your data, but humans may review your interactions with these experimental AI tools to improve the models—a common caveat with AI services, especially free ones. So don’t use the AI Test Kitchen tools for anything that needs to stay completely private.
