How does debt ceiling effect the stock market?

Noob investor. My stocks took a beating today. I read as much as I can on this matter but I am just not versed in all these financial terms and jargon. Can somebody explain to me in simplest terms why stocks are going down due to our debt ceiling issue in the U.S.?

Thanks.

Large cap stocks vs. Index funds

Hey all,

Have more of a general question - I recently opened up positions in a few large cap stocks (AMZN, META, PEP to be specific) with plans to hold these for the foreseeable future. Long term holds that I don't plan on looking at or touching too often. The question I have is - what is the reason do to do this rather than just put it all in some index fund like VTI? Am I better off just throwing all of these funds in an index fund like that? Realis

Lost Shares: No Internship

I was gifted $500 in McDonalds stock around 13 years ago, which has since been lost. I’ve talked to the transfer agent and the broker, but have been unable to verify my ownership. - the shares were purchased by my grandpa through fidelity - computershare and fidelity cannot verify my ownership (due to a lack of records)

I was accepted into an internship in London for my dream job, but the flights and extra costs are expensive, and this might make or break

Anyone short or considering going short on AI stocks?

With all the AI talk lately, it's starting to feel reminiscent of the dot com crash. I believe AI is truly a transformative technology like the internet, but it seems like we are climbing towards the "peak of inflated expectations" in Gartner hype cycle terms.

I'm curious if others feel that way, and if so, what AI companies seem overblown and likely to come back to earth as leaders get separated from the pretenders. Or is it still too s

Escheatment Question

I have 5 shares of a stock worth about $2.50/share. I had previously closed an online brokerage account and had them send me the physical shares. So I have these very pretty large physical shares sitting in my closet, but its all only worth about $10, not worth the bus trip to take them somewhere to turn them into cash.

I received a letter recently from Broadridge, a firm I have never used, saying that I had to call them and possibly do some paperwork or

Swap short positions before ex dividend date

Let’s say I’m short SPY and want to avoid paying the dividend. The last ex-dividend date for SPY was March 17 while VOO had an ex-dividend date of March 24. It seems that I can sell SPY on March 16 and buy VOO on same date and do the opposite before March 24 to avoid paying the dividend on either stocks. Is there any risk that I’m missing here?

Anyone with some news/explanation for Abcellera (ABCL) movement past two days?

I've been with the stock for a long time (unfortunately) and I'm just very curious as to why the stock has increased the past few days. Does anyone have any information? I'm in Sweden and can't find anything that would explain the movement.
