Tell HN: My advice after I applied to 450 positions before getting hired

I wanted to briefly share my experience as a senior engineer with 15 years of experience trying to find work in this market, because it was exhausting for me and i'm sure others will appreciate the perspective.

As the title says, I have applied to over 450 positions. Most companies did not even send me a rejection. Ghost jobs are a thing, so are fake roles to get you to signup/join some rando job board.

I interviewed for a director of engineering role, and all interviews went well, but t

This simple free service makes sharing PDFs painless

Look, I’m not gonna lie to ya’: I’ve got a bit of a love-hate relationship with PDFs. And, more often than not, it veers mostly toward the “hate” side of that spectrum.

Don’t get me wrong: PDFs are certainly useful. When you need to share something with specific formatting and know it’ll look exactly the same to anyone who sees it, there’s no better way to get the job done.

But, man, is it ever a headache-inducing moment when you see such a file show up in

Palantir is mapping government data. What it means for governance

When the U.S. government signs contracts with private technology companies, the fine print rarely reaches the public. Palantir Technologies, however, has attracted more and more attention over the past decade because of the size and scope of its contracts with the government.

Palantir’s two main platforms are Foundry and Gotham. Each does different things. Foundry is used by corporations in the private sector to help with global operations. G

Show HN: Hacker News em dash user leaderboard pre-ChatGPT

The use of the em dash (—) now raises suspicions that a text might have been AI-generated. Inspired by a suggestion from dang [1], I created a leaderboard of HN users according to how many of their posts before November 30, 2022—that is, before the release of ChatGPT—contained em dashes. Dang himself comes in number 2—by a very slim margin.

Credit to Claude Code for showing me how to search the HN database through Google BigQuery and for writing the HTML for the leaderboard.
