Amazon’s Ring is raising monthly and annual subscription fees for doorbell cameras

It’s not just streaming services that are hitting customers with price hikes. Now Amazon-owned Ring has announced that those who subscribe to its entry-level plans will be paying more for the service beginning next month.

This week, Ring announced that it is raising the cost for its Ring Protect Basic plan on March 11, 2024. From that date, the Ring Protect Basic plan will be priced as follows:

  • $4.99 a month (up from $3.99)
  • $49.99 a year (up from $39.99)

That’s a price increase of over 22% no matter which option you choose.

The Ring Protect Basic plan is Ring’s entry-level subscription plan that allows users to receive notifications of doorbell rings and also allows users to arm or disarm the Ring system from an app. Without the plan, Ring users are only able to livestream the feed from their doorbell and get motion alerts.

Ring also offers Plus and Pro subscriptions with more features at a higher cost—$10 per month and $20 per month, respectively. However, Ring says those plans will not be getting price hikes. Only the price of the Basic plan is rising.

Some users angry about another subscription price hike took to X to vent their frustration, with some noting that there are no new benefits added along with the price rise.

Hi @ring. Got your email about the annual plan rate going from $39.99 to $49.99. Missing from the email is what additional benefits customers will be receiving for this increase. We buy and install our own equipment, do our own monitoring, troubleshoot devices…why the increase?

Others pointed out that this isn’t the first time in recent memory that Ring has upped its prices. While others said the price rise is too much, so they’ll go without the subscription.

Bye Bye @ring too much expensive for a ring doorbell. i'll buy one without cloud!Starting 11 March 2024, the price of RingProtect Basic will change from $39.99/year to $49.99/year per device.

Those unhappy with the price hike and who cancel before their next billing date may be able to get a prorated refund. Full details can be found here.
