Banks are strong, so is it a crisis after all?

I'd like to highlight a fascinating observation.

The first quarter bore witness to major drama in the US banking sector. Two banks declared bankruptcy, with one entering liquidation. Foreboding headlines predicted financial system meltdowns, even drawing parallels to the 2008 crisis.

And yet, yesterday, when the FDIC released aggregate banking sector results, their data indicated that the total net profit of US banks in Q1 2023 was up 3

PSA: Do you beat yourself up after missing 'obvious' opportunities like Nvidia and AI? It's not just you, and it's called Hindsight Bias.

Before I knew about this psychological bias, I (and many others I know) thought we just had trouble 'biting the bullet' and investing in solid ideas. Thoughts like "it was in front of me all along, but for some reason, I was too scared to put money into it" were common. But the fact of the matter is, there are thousands of 'ideas' at any given moment, and the ones that actually make the news and become multi-baggers were not

Selling 1/3 of my holding. Does the broker sell my long term or short positions?

I've been DCA'ing over the last 1.5 years in a stock and it's gone up.

If I sell a 1/3 of that stock, does the broker sell my long term positions or short term positions or a mix? I'm tax curious. I would think they'd naturally sell the long term positions so my tax is only 15% on the gains, which is smaller than the 37% tax on short term positions.

Analyst price targets

What is the point of price targets that analysts give when for a given stock they can vary widely between different analysts and one analyst might give a 12 month price target than change it after next quarter. Why give a "12 month" target at all if youre just going to change it multiple times in that 12 month timeframe.

If ALO had an IPO

I read a WSJ article recently, and was thinking how would LULU and NKE react if ALO went public. I think it may not lead to changes in their strategy, but their stocks may have less volume as there is another sportswear company to invest in if one wants to get exposed to that market

Question about gap fills

Isnt it said that 90 % of daily gaps get filled, or something along those lines? And isnt there a ton of individual big name companies, that have gaps to fill near the most recent bottom? Is not not inevitable that the market test these lows again and fill these gaps? Thanks in advance

BSM - Am I missing something?

I bought into Black Stone Minerals ($BSM) a couple of months ago. While it is not a "growth", the dividends provide a nice return. I look at them as a "defensive" component of my portfolio. Whatdaya think?

What they do & who they are:

Black Stone Minerals owns and manages oil and natural gas mineral interests. It owns mineral interests in approximately 16.8 million gross acres, nonparticipating royalty inter

Recession fears out in hold?

With the debt ceiling talks over and a bill put in place to raise the ceiling, are recession fears put on hold for 2 years? It sounds like the money printing machines are back on and QE will be in effect for a bit.

CFG ESPP 10% discount. What caveat to look out for?

It seems ESPP’s are a no brainer, but I just want to double check myself since some have talked about how important it is to understand how it is setup.

The description reads: “Purchases of shares under the ESPP will be at a 10% discount from the closing price on the date of purchase, the last day of each quarter. · ESPP shares may be sold immediately following purchase at the end of each quarter and are not subject to a 180-day hold period, subject to c

Likelihood of Bank of New York selling Petrochina H shares that underly delisted ADR shares?

I held petrochina shares in vanguard, they were delisted last october and I didn't pay attention. From my research and calling vanguard it seems there are 2 options:

  1. Transfer the ADR shares to H shares in a 3rd party brokerage and do an OTC trade
  2. Wait to see if Bank of New York sells the H shares and provides the proceeds to ADP shareholders (aka cash shows up in my vanguard account)
  • Alternatively: they don't, an
