Begone, passwords! Facebook and Messenger finally add passkey support

Meta is now starting to roll out support for passkeys to all Facebook users on Android and IOS.

Passkeys are a password-free authentication standard that is stored locally on your device, be it a smartphone, a computer, or a USB-based hardware security key. After your device is registered as a passkey, login requests will route a notification to that device, which you can approve using a PIN code, your face, or your fingerprint. If you’re activating passkeys in your Facebook mobile app, you’ll probably use the phone itself as a passkey.

Because passkeys cannot be reused or stolen through phishing, they’re a much more secure alternative to traditional passwords. In fact, our resident security expert says she’s ditching all her passwords, and you should too.

Want to get started on the journey? Facebook users can enable passkeys through their settings. In a few months, the feature will also be added to Messenger, where it will be possible to use the same passkey you’ve already established for your Facebook account.
